Rally In Newark Marks 4th Anniversary Of George Floyd’s Murder

Floyd's death continues to be a "galvanizing force for justice," U.S. Senate candidate Larry Hamm said.

NEWARK, NJ — A rally was held in Newark last weekend to mark the fourth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder.

Saturday’s rally and march was spearheaded by the People’s Organization for Progress, which helped to organize a massive protest in Floyd’s name in 2020. Read More: 5 Inspiring Glimpses Into Newark’s Peaceful George Floyd Protest

Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020.

“George Floyd’s life, death and the impact of his death, was and should continue to be a galvanizing force for justice,” said Lawrence Hamm, who is running as a Democrat in the 2024 primary election for the U.S. Senate in New Jersey.

“We should see to it that it continues to be so,” Hamm added.

That afternoon, Hamm joined the family of Andrew Washington for a special gathering to mark the anniversary of Floyd’s death in Jersey City.

The gathering was dedicated to the memories of four men killed by the police in mental crises, the POP said: Washington, Bernard Placide Jr., Major Gulia Dale III and Najee Seabrooks.

Washington was killed on Aug. 27, 2023.His death sparked protests in Jersey City and played an important role in the recent signing of the Seabrooks-Washington bill by Gov. Phil Murphy, which pilots community-led emergency response teams.
