Take Air Quality Precautions In Newark; Wildfire Smoke Returns
Due to smoke from the continuing Canadian wildfires, the NJDEP has issued an air quality alert for the state, including Newark.
NEWARK, NJ -- Newark city officials are advising residents who are susceptible to respiratory difficulty to take precautions during the most recent air quality alert issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

According to a statement from the mayor's office, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Newark registered at 103 on Thursday morning, which is a concern for older or pregnant people, children, and those with health conditions that put them at risk.

“Due to smoke from the continuing Canadian wildfires, the NJDEP has issued an air quality alert for the state, including Newark, which should inform the actions of everyone with respiratory conditions,” Mayor Ras Baraka said.
“I once again ask residents to protect their health by staying informed and carefully following NJDEP’s guidelines throughout the duration of the alert,” Baraka said.

To protect yourself from the current poor air quality, the NJDEP advises:
- Staying indoors as much as possible
- Keeping your windows closed
- Using an air purifier if possible
- If you must go outside, limit your physical activity and wear a mask
