Things to Do This Holiday Weekend

Baseball, skating, cricket and Branch Brook Park

Here are a few great reasons to hang out in the City of Newark this holiday weekend. Click on the "events" tab to see more. Feel free to add your own in the comments section.

If the weather is good, head over to Branch Brook Park. Enjoy a picnic, strolling, jogging, cycling, bird watching and so much more. Open 365 days a year, the park welcomes visitors from dawn until 10 p.m. Admission to the park is always free.

WHY GO: Skies Alive focuses on New Jersey's role in bird migration.  The interactive exhibit illustrates the uniqueness of the state's diverse environments and the importance of preserving its natural resources to ensure the survival of these transient birds.

COST: Adults $10; Children, seniors and students with valid ID $6; Members free.

WHAT: Rock the Stadium: Newark Bears Kids Club Singing Competition
WHERE:
Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, 450 Broad St.
WHEN:  Saturday, 10 a.m.
WHY GO: Bands and solo artists of any genre compete for free to win four hours of studio time. Judged by world-reknown music producers who have worked with Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Jessica Simpson, U2 and many more.

WHY GO: Enjoy America's favorite pastime complete with a fireworks show.

WHAT: Home Depot Kid's Workshop: Making Locker Message Boards
WHEN: Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon
WHERE
: Home Depot, Springfield Ave.
WHY GO: Children can build an ESPN College Game Day-themed dry erase board for Team Tailgating Day. All kids get to keep their craft and receive a free kids workshop apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement.

WHAT: 2011 New Jersey T20 Cricket Tournament
WHERE:

WHY GO:
Cricket Council USA, a sports and entertainment management organization, has joined forces with Cricket Happening to sponsor the 2011 New Jersey T20 Cricket Tournament. Six power-packed teams will compete for the championship trophy and $5,000 in cash.
