University Hospital In Newark Performs 1500th Liver Transplant
University Hospital's advanced liver diseases and transplant department – one of the busiest in the nation – hit a big milestone.

NEWARK, NJ — University Hospital in Newark recently celebrated a big milestone: it’s 1,500th liver transplant.
On Thursday, administrators announced that the hospital’s advanced liver diseases and transplant department – one of the busiest in the nation – successfully performed its 1,500th procedure.
“The liver transplant team at University Hospital is among the most productive and highest quality services of its kind in the nation,” said Shereef Elnahal, president and CEO.

“We are proud to reach this milestone—it reflects our continued dedication to the residents of Newark and beyond,” Elnahal said.
Nikolas Pyrsopoulos, medical director of liver transplantation, said the team was “extremely proud” of the work that’s been done at the center over the years.

“Moving forward, we will continue providing high-quality care to all of our patients, while implementing innovative procedures that improve the transplantation operation,” Pyrsopoulos said.
James Guarrera, program director of liver transplantation, pointed out that the milestone is also due to the people who donated organs, their families, and groups such as the NJ Sharing Network which bring them all together.
“This is an exciting moment for the center, and we are thankful for the organ donors and their families for the gift of life that made this possible,” he said.
