Video Shows Newark Airport Flooding In Storm; Flights Suspended

NEWARK, NJ — You know a storm is bad when people start describing it as "Biblical."
That's what one person had to say about the weather that hit Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday night, as the remnants of Hurricane Ida moved through the region.
As of 11 p.m., all flight activity was suspended at the airport. All NJ Transit and Amtrak rail service was also suspended "until further notice," airport officials said.

It didn't come as a surprise for many travelers. Forecasters had warned that parts of the state could see flooding, thunderstorms and possibly tornadoes from Wednesday to Thursday. But the sheer volume of the downpour stunned many commuters and local weather buffs.

Watching from afar, but as a meteorologist, this is one of the scariest weather nights I've ever seen in the Northeast. Newark Airport had 6.36" of rain in the 2.5 hr ending at 9:30 pm and it's still raining heavily.

Meanwhile, jaw-dropping footage of flooding at the airport began to spread online. A video posted by Twitter user @mikeybrasi87 showed a "swimming pool" at the ground level of Terminal B.

Before the flooding hit, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey warned that flights may be impacted Wednesday and Thursday.

On Thursday night, airport officials reported that all parking lots at the airport were closed.

"They just told us we won't get our baggage tonight ... to come back tomorrow," one traveler tweeted Wednesday night.
In an update around 10:30 p.m., airport officials tweeted that all flight activity was suspended.
"We're experiencing severe flooding due to tonight’s storm," officials said. "All flight activity is currently suspended and travelers are strongly advised to contact their airline for the latest flight and service resumption information. Passengers are being diverted from ground-level flooded areas."
