Newark's board of education election will take place on Tuesday, April 16.
NEWARK, NJ — Several community partners held a candidate forum for the 2024 Newark Board of Education election on Tuesday at the Newark Museum of Art (watch the video below, or view it online here).
The forum was hosted by Project Ready, Chalkbeat, the New Jersey Black Empowerment Coalition and the Gem Project.
Newark’s board of education election will take place on Tuesday, April 16. There are nine candidates competing for three general seats on the board:

- Muta El-Amin
- Dawn Y. Haynes (incumbent)
- Latoya Jackson
- Sheila Montague
- Debra Salters
- Vereliz Santana (incumbent)
- Helena Vinhas (incumbent)
- Jimmie White
Another candidate, Kanileah Anderson, is running unopposed in a special election for an unexpired at-large seat on the board, which was left vacant when former board member Asia Norton resigned.
