Week in Review: Deadly Restaurant Shooting, New Hotel Opens, Newark Welcomes Gilda's Club

A Newark man has been charged with murder after allegedly opening fire inside a popular family-owned restaurant Thursday morning, killing one and wounding two others, including an 81-year-old woman.

Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Courtyard by Marriott Newark Downtown, located on Broad and Lafayette streets near the Prudential Center. The new, mixed-used hotel has 150 rooms and 14,000 sq. ft. of retail space on the ground floor. The retail space will soon house a 6,000-sq. ft. restaurant, to be announced next month, as well as four smaller stores.

A 64-year-old Orange man was found stabbed late Friday evening in a Newark apartment on Sanford Avenue and later died, according to authorities. 

Gilda's Club Newark opened its red door Tuesday, offering a warm and loving hangout for cancer patients and anyone affected by the illness.

Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Early Childhood School West, located in the old Speedway Avenue School in the city's West Ward. The school, tailored for children with things like brightly colored walls and a reading corner with tiny furniture in the auditorium, currently serves 75 three- and four-year-olds.

The City of Newark will provide free influenza vaccinations for Newark residents throughout the city during September, October, November, and December beginning Thursday, Sept.  27.   Detailsof all sites, dates, and times are listed below.

The presidential election is a month and a half away and a group of Newarkers is wasting no time in rallying to get 10,000 new voters to the polls.

The exit 56 ramp on I-78 for Elizabeth Avenue will be closed for approximately the next three weeks as repairs on the highway continue, the state Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

Integrity House, a nationally recognized substance abuse rehabilitation center with locations in Newark and Secaucus, will host its annual Newark Corporate 5K Run on the streets of downtown Newark at noon Wednesday, Oct. 3 to help raise funds for their community outreach programs and programming for women. The run is sponsored by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, PSE&G and WB Mason.
