See The Bigger New ER At Robert Wood Hospital In New Brunswick

In an effort to see more patients faster, RWJUH in New Brunswick now has a special children's ER, more rooms and ambulance bays.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — After two years of construction, this past Friday Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital celebrated the completion of its ER expansion project. Now fully completed, the Robert Wood Johnson ER has expanded from 40,000 to 60,000 square feet.

As hospitals in New Jersey compete against each other to woo patients, ER expansions are becoming quite trendy: Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge and Bayshore Medical Center — both owned by rival Hackensack Meridian healthcare system — both launched ambitious ER expansions this year. For example, Hackensack poured $39 million into renovating and expanding the ER at Raritan Bay-Old Bridge.

Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick is one of only three Level I Trauma Centers in New Jersey, with the other two being Cooper University Hospital in Camden and University Hospital in Newark. Robert Wood Johnson currently sees 95,000 ER and trauma patients per year. And that number continues to grow.

In addition to being able to serve more patients — and with shorter wait times — several enhancements were made to the new ER including:

  • 100+ new, private treatment areas for patients
  • A separate, expanded Pediatric Emergency Department dedicated to children
  • Treatment area dedicated to patients who arrive with less emergency diagnoses
  • In-department radiology and CT imaging to increase efficiency and reduce wait times for test results

RWJUH New Brunswick and RWJBarnabas Health launched the ambitious Emergency Department expansion project on March 6, 2017.

There is also a new ambulance entrance with parking to accommodate eight ambulances and increased space to facilitate an easier entrance and exit for ambulance crews, three new resuscitation bays for care of the most acutely ill and injured patients, plus a decontamination area, among other improvements.
