Dog Kills Rabid Skunk In Piscataway

Someone's pet dog killed a skunk that turned out to have rabies over Labor Day weekend in Piscataway.

PISCATAWAY, NJ — Someone's pet dog killed a skunk that turned out to have rabies over Labor Day weekend in Piscataway, the Middlesex County Office of Health Services announced.

This happened in the area of Blackford Avenue and William Street in Piscataway on Saturday, Sept. 5, according to the county. The dog and its owner are both considered exposed to rabies.

On Saturday, Piscataway Animal Control responded to the homeowner's property, where their pet dog had killed a skunk. The skunk was taken to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory for testing and results came back Thursday that it tested positive for rabies.

There was one human exposure, and the dog. The dog is currently vaccinated for rabies and was evaluated by a veterinarian. The resident was told to consult with a physician regarding rabies post-exposure treatment, said county officials.

This is the sixth rabid animal reported within Middlesex County for 2020 and the second rabid animal found in Piscataway.
