Fatal Stabbing, Shooting Near Rutgers Early Saturday

A fatal stabbing and a shooting happened early Saturday near the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick.

The separate early-morning incidents are under investigation by the New Brunswick Police Department.

According to information from Rutgers University Police Department, a man was stabbed around 2:30 a.m. during a robbery. The fatal altercation happened on Hamilton Street between Woodbridge and Bridge streets, about a half mile from campus.

The victim, who is not affiliated with the university, was approached by two or three men who demanded personal property, police said. "A physical altercation ensued and the victim was assaulted with a sharp object. The victim was treated by first responders on scene, but died from his injuries," according to information from Rutgers University Police Department.

The descriptions of the perpetrators are limited at this time, police said.

About an hour earlier, a shooting was reported at Church and Spring streets. Two people sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to a local area hospital for treatment, authorities say.

A description of the perpetrator involved in that incident are also limited, according to police.

The New Brunswick Police Department asks that anyone with information on the incidents to call 732-745-5217.

Meanwhile Rutgers University Police Department is reminding the community to report suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Police also offered the following safety tips in light of the incidents:

  • Remain alert and aware of the people and circumstances around you
  • Avoid isolated or dark areas
