On February 15, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., the congregation of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, New Brunswick, New Jersey, led by their pastors, Revs. Eric R. and Myra T. Billips, will hold a special service for the burning of its mortgage. The Presiding Prelate of the First Episcopal District, The Rt. Rev. Gregory G. M. Ingram, will be the preacher for the service.
On June 30, 1974, Bishop Ernest L. Hickman, Presiding Elder John Wesley Johnson, and Rev. Henry A. Hildebrand, Pastor, broke the ground at the corner of New and Neilson Streets. The congregation struggled through a number of setbacks and construction delays, but was finally able to secure a mortgage and erect the new edifice on its property. In 1987 (thirteen years after the ground breaking ceremony) the congregation moved into their current building. The Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in New Brunswick was organized in 1827 largely through the efforts of members Joseph and Jane Hoagland who gave the land for the original building on Division Street in New Brunswick. The Division Street property remained the location of the church for 160 years. In October, 2014, the church celebrated its 187th anniversary.
