NBPA Adds Electric Vehicle (EV) to its Fleet

The NBPA is proud to announce the addition of an Electric Vehicle to its fleet of cars and trucks.

The NBPA is proud to announce the addition of an Electric Vehicle to its fleet of cars and trucks. “The vehicle was purchased through almost $15,000 in combined grants and credits, by taking advantage of incentives offered by PSE&G and Nissan,” said NBPA Executive Director Mitch Karon.

“The vehicle, a 2017 Nissan Leaf, will be used by our Parking Services Supervisors assisting patrons and supporting Parking Services Attendants at NBPA facilities throughout the City of New Brunswick”, added Karon.

Electricity for EVs cost much less than gasoline. According to Plug in America, the Sierra Club, and the Electric Auto Association, driving an electric vehicle is about five times cheaper than fueling with gasoline. It is much more convenient to simply plug in than to stop at a gas station to fill your gas tank. In addition to being environmentally friendly by combating climate change and reducing pollutants, they are also economically friendly as the maintenance costs are reduced substantially.

Maintenance for EVs costs much less than for gasoline vehicles. EVs require no oil changes and have ten (10) times fewer moving parts than a gasoline powered car. There is no engine, transmission, spark plugs, valves, fuel tank, tailpipe, distributor, starter, clutch, muffler, or catalytic converter. EVs are not only fun to drive but they are also smooth and quiet, and their high torque – even at low speeds – provides instant accelerator response, and also better performance in snow.

The New Brunswick Parking Authority has been a provider of charging stations for their patrons at various NBPA garages for over four years. Recently, through another PSE&G grant, the NBPA acquired ten (10) charging stations. There are currently five (5) charging stations at the Gateway garage and five (5) at the Wellness garage.
