Politicians and Business Leaders Turn Out for Children in Foster
Fundraiser to help Middlesex County children in foster care to be held in downtown New Brunswick.

Every year local politicians, community leaders and friends mingle during a champagne brunch and silent auction to benefit CASA of Middlesex County. This year’s event will be held May 6 at Steakhouse 85, New Brunswick. The funds raised will go toward helping CASA achieve their goal of giving every child in foster care in Middlesex County an advocate to look out for their needs.
This year’s event will honor the late Dr. Henry Plotkin and Susanne Peticolas Esq. for their dedication to improving the lives of New Jersey’s children. Dr. Plotkin was a longtime member of the CASA Board before his passing in 2017, while his partner Ms. Peticolas continues to inspire and lead through her continued work with CASA.
Championing a child in foster care has never been more needed. Last year only 22% of children who were eligible for a CASA were provided one. “Children living in foster care have suffered trauma, abuse and neglect. They are often confused and fearful of their uncertain future.” Stephanie Brown, Director of CASA of Middlesex County noted. “The well-intentioned systems designed to serve these vulnerable kids can often overlook the needs of an individual child.”

Children with a CASA advocate are more likely to be adopted and less likely to re-enter foster care. They also perform better in school, have more stability and spend less time in foster care as a whole. Children of color, who are statistically less likely to have a plan when aging out of the foster care system are also more likely to have a plan for permanency when aging out.
CASA recruits, trains and supports volunteer advocates to serve these children. Advocates review Court case files, interview the children, their families, therapists and attend team and school meetings. They prepare court reports and attend court hearings to advocate for the child’s best interests. Volunteers attend 30 hours of training offered 3 times a year, complete 3 hours of court observation and are sworn in by the Court. Advocates agree to an 18 month commitment and are supported by CASA staff every step of the way.

Many local businesses have contributed to the silent auction. Some unique items include a one year membership to Zimmerli Art Museum in New Brunswick and the chance to tour QVC for one person and five of their friends. In addition to event tickets, CASA of Middlesex County is offering sponsorships and ad journal opportunities, as well as accepting donations from individuals and business for the silent auction.
