About the production

Going, Wanting in the Age of the Selfie propositions its audience… “Put down your smartphone for 70 minutes to consider… where is our world going? What do I want out of life? How does technology play a role?”

Conceived to entertain and engage general, everyday audiences, Going, Wanting uses creative and performing art forms to ‘post public comment on the wall’ about society’s everyday intimate interface with social media.

Weaving together contemporary choreography, music scores, live jazz instrumentation, monologue and digital media into a thematic narrative, Going, Wanting offers audiences a journey to explore the motives and emotions surrounding human nature in today’s fast-paced digital era.

Featuring new choreography by Lauren Putty White alongside production members Brenda Li, Jesse Jones, and Erin Burgmayer, Going, Wanting features a fusion of styles and techniques spanning jazz to postmodern, hip-hop to Horton. Putty-White’s choreography is set to a future jazz music score composed by husband, Brent White, and is accented by live improvisation performed by White on trombone and Craig Ebner on guitar. Actor Christina May weaves between live performance scenes to engage audiences with monologue. Fourth-wall down, May delivers personalized struggles and wins with selfies, cyber speak and online dating. Digital media montages designed by Phil Sumpter, edited by Dave Jannetta, aid the audience’s experiential journey.

As society acknowledges the World Wide Web is here to stay, Going, Wanting poses the fundamental questions, “Are we GOING too fast, WANTING too badly to be noticed in a seemingly infinite sea of options and information?”
