From Main Street Highland Park, the non-profit community group that hosts the movies:
Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, who started his career making some of the most successful films in Dutch history, found his way to Hollywood in the 1980s and for two decades produced a string of sci-fi action blockbusters (ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL, STARSHIP TROOPERS) with a couple of erotic thriller/dramas (BASIC INSTINCT, SHOWGIRLS) thrown in for good measure. Verhoeven grew up in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, and the violence he was exposed to as a child left an impact on his filmmaking — his use of gore, almost on a horror-movie level, is done with purpose, holding a mirror to humanity to reveal the monster within. He also has fun satirizing his adopted home country — his dystopian vision of Detroit in ROBOCOP is overrun with corporate greed and off-the-rails pop culture. A true tribute to the times — 1987 or today — ROBOCOP is a popcorn movie with a heart and a message — one that we're proud to bring to the Outdoor Movie Theater. Not to be missed! See you there, friends
