Rutgers Employee Charged With Stealing Union Funds: Report

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A former union president who works at Rutgers University was arrested on campus and charged with stealing more than $75,000 in union funds, according to a report in the Courier News.

Shelby Hyman is the woman who was arrested; she is the former president of AFSCME Local 1761, a union that represents state, county and municipal employees. Hyman works as a health technician at Rutgers, and she was arrested Dec. 11 while at work, on campus at the Rutgers Hurtado Health Center. That's the student health center on the Rutgers New Brunswick campus.

Hyman lives in the Somerset section of Franklin Twp.

She was charged with second-degree misapplication of entrusted property and second-degree theft by unlawful taking.

She allegedly took the money sometime between Jan. 1, 2012 and July 31, 2018.

"There is absolutely no excuse for this type of behavior," AFSCME New Jersey Council 63 Executive Director Steve Tully said in a statement provided to the Courier News. "When this suspected theft was reported to Council 63, we immediately contacted the International Union and conducted an internal audit to determine the facts. Upon completing the internal audit, we contacted the appropriate law enforcement authorities to report the theft of funds by Ms. Hyman. We take the theft of union funds very seriously and we will continue to cooperate with law enforcement to hold Ms. Hyman accountable."
