Rutgers Hires New University President Jonathan Holloway

Holloway's base salary as president will be $780,000, an increase from outgoing Rutgers president Robert Barchi ($748,259 per year).

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — On Tuesday, the Rutgers Board of Governors approved the hiring of Jonathan Holloway as the 21st president of Rutgers University. He will the first African-American president of Rutgers.

Holloway will begin his job as president on July 1 of this year. He will take the helm of Rutgers, succeeding current RU President Robert Barchi. Barchi began his tenure in September 2012 and will step down this year.

Holloway's base salary as president will be $780,000, a Rutgers spokeswoman confirmed to Patch. As he exits the job, Barchi's base salary was $748,259 with an opportunity for performance incentive pay of up to 25 percent of his base annual salary.

Holloway, 52, is currently the provost at Northwestern University; Rutgers and Northwestern are both in the Big Ten conference. Provost meant he was Northwestern’s chief academic officer, overseeing all educational policies and academic priorities, preparing the annual budget and hiring faculty.

It's a job he has had since 2017. Before moving to Northwestern, Holloway was the dean of Yale College and a professor of African American Studies, History and American Studies at Yale University. At Northwestern, he also is a professor of History and African American studies, specializing in post-emancipation social and intellectual United States history.

Holloway received his bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Stanford University. He played college football for Stanford, and played alongside current U.S. Senator Cory Booker, MyCentralJersey reported. He then obtained his Ph.D. in History from Yale University.

As it was expected Barchi would retire this year, Rutgers led a 23-member presidential search committee and said the school received more than 200 nominations and applications.
