Rutgers Lab Creates COVID-19 Educational Video in Spanish

COVID-19 disproportionately impacts Latinx families more than any other racial and ethnic group, yet there are few available resources to mitigate their risks.

The Rutgers School of Public Health’s Cancer Health Justice Lab has launched an educational COVID-19 video in Spanish to address the lack of resources available to Latinx families.

The video provides Spanish-speaking families with essential information regarding COVID-19 in plain language. Though the video is in Spanish, English subtitles have also been added to appeal to English and Spanish-speaking communities.

“In the summer of 2020 and during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Latinx families had very few resources to help them make informed health and safety decisions,” says Pamela Valera, assistant professor in the department of urban-global public health at the Rutgers School of Public Health and founding director of the Cancer Health Justice Lab.

Cancer Health Justice Lab members worked to address the lack of COVID-19 educational resources for Latinx families by developing a video with information on how to prevent the disease’s spread. Lab members include public health researchers, activists, community members, and undergraduate and graduate students, including Rutgers School of Public Health students Luis Alzate-Duque, Lashida Barnes, Sarah Malarkey, and Nadia Smith.

“We hope that this video can be of use to anyone, but mainly for bilingual or Spanish-speaking people,” Malarkey and Smith add.
