Rutgers Launches Online System To Report Crime

Rutgers University announced Thursday they are moving to an online system so Rutgers students and faculty can report crime.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Although there will be a limited number of students back on the Rutgers campus this fall, crime may — unfortunately — still occur.

That's why Rutgers University announced Thursday they are moving to an online system so Rutgers students and faculty can report crime. It was created in response to concerns about the safety of in-person crime reporting during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, said Chief Kenneth Cop of the Rutgers University Police Department. The new system can be found here: https://ipo.rutgers.edu/publicsafety/crimereportingsystem

“We are really excited to offer this service," said Chief Cop. "The goal is to provide members of the community with an easy to use tool for reporting incidents to Rutgers University Police. You can even file a report from a mobile device."

In this stunning announcement made Monday, Rutgers announced students will not be allowed to live back on campus this fall, with most dorms remaining closed and nearly all classes delivered virtually, as they were in the spring.

Chief Cop said Rutgers campus police have been testing the new online system over the past several months. It will be used across the Rutgers New Brunswick, Camden and Newark campuses.

Police ask that it be used to report "minor" crimes, such as these listed below. In a life-threatening emergency or if a student feels unsafe, they should always call 911.

  • All thefts without suspect information, excluding firearms and materials threatening to public safety, such as explosives or highly toxic substances.
  • Auto burglaries without suspect information.
  • Burglaries without forced entry or suspect information.
  • Attempted stolen vehicles without suspect information.
  • Vandalism without suspect information (so long as it is not motivated by bias).
  • Annoying telephone calls without suspect information.
  • Lost property reports.
  • Fraudulent practices.
  • Suspicious activity.
  • Non-criminal incidents.

All other crimes will require direct communication with the RUPD, which can be reached at 732-932-8407 (New Brunswick), 865-225-6009 (Camden) or 973-353-5581 (Newark).
