Rutgers Cancels Classes For Rest Of Spring Semester

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Rutgers University will not resume classes on campus for the rest of the spring semester, university president Robert Barchi announced Tuesday afternoon, and commencement in May is canceled.

Remote instruction will continue through the end of the semester, with students learning online and communicating with professors virtually.

"With a heavy heart, I am announcing that Rutgers University is suspending all in-person instruction, with the exception of clinical instruction, for the remainder of the spring semester," said Barchi in an email Tuesday afternoon to students and staff. "All events scheduled at the University through the month of May are suspended."

Students will still get their degrees.

A final determination on whether or not commencements can be rescheduled to a later date will be made in the coming weeks.

Residential students will receive a notification over the coming days about moving out of dorms. Students who received a waiver to continue residing on campus will be permitted to stay, said Barchi.

Rutgers will be issuing prorated refunds for room and board.
