Rutgers Still Requires Masks In Classrooms, But Not In Dorms

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Effective Monday of this week, masks are now optional in all Rutgers dorms, offices, conference rooms, research labs and public spaces, the university announced.

However, masks will still be required in all teaching spaces (classrooms, lecture halls, seminar rooms, etc.), teaching labs, computer labs, buses, libraries and clinical facilities.

Masks are still required in teaching labs — but not research labs — because they hold more people, said the university.

Additionally, face coverings will be required in student-staff and student-faculty meeting spaces.

Rutgers was the first university in America to require all students get the coronavirus vaccine, or students would have to dis-enroll (and then eventually Rutgers extended the mandate to all teachers and staff). And then this past October, Rutgers required all students get the booster shot, as well. Rutgers said in the fall of 2021 that more than 99 percent of their student body complied and got the vaccine.
