Satellite Technology Could Provide Internet Access To Billions Of People That Currently Don't Have It

Satellite technology may be the technology that will enable internet access for half the world's population that is currently not connected

So many technological bigwigs are in some form of competition with each other. This time around it isn't about who gets to mars first, or who will invent the next high-tech gadget, but this competition is on how to provide high-speed Internet access to the people all over the world. They are competing against each other in the bid to connect people with high-speed Internet service using a form of global network of satellites. As a result of heavy investments made by some big tech companies, satellite technology is bound to improve rapidly in the near future. People living in many third world countries do not have access to high-speed Internet access. This huge population serves as a potential market, which needs to be supplied with high tech including high-speed Internet access.

Almost a half of the world population still does not have access to high-speed Internet service. This represents a huge market with hundreds of millions of customers waiting to be served. Many high-tech companies that are up to this task are working toward delivering Satellite Internet service to these people to bring them up to speed with the rest of the world who enjoy good internet access while at the same time expand their market. The companies which are undertaking this enormous task of making Satellite Internet available to people worldwide include Google, OneWeb LTD, which has Sir Richard Branson on their board of directors, Elon Musk (through his company SpaceX) and Internet.org, which is a subsidiary of Facebook Inc. The good thing about this competition is that it will inevitably lead to a decrease in the amount people pay for internet subscription, and also lead to an increased quality of internet services and satellite TV.

Apart from third world countries, some rural areas in the United States also do not have access to high-speed Internet. These rural dwellers still rely on outdated technology for accessing the Internet. One way of providing Internet access to this large number of people is by laying high tech fiber optic cables all through their locality. Although this method is effective in providing the desired service, is a very expensive project, and is not cost effective for these profit seeking tech companies. An alternative and cost effective means of providing this service is by building a global satellite internet network. This task is enormous, but it can be achieved by building lots of micro-satellites, which will work together to power a broadband Internet system.

Companies such as Google and Facebook started small, but have now benefitted a lot from the large number of people who are currently using the Internet. The more people have access to high speed Internet, the more these companies make a lot of money. They have therefore realized that making high speed internet available to all areas of the world would invariably increase the amount of people using their platform, and hence increase their totally revenue. It is in view of this that these technological big wigs are working hard to make sure that high speed Internet becomes accessible to the whole world.
