See Photos From Anti-ICE Protest At Rutgers Wednesday
"It is not if, but when armed ICE agents show up on campus," a grad student told the Rutgers Board of Governors Wednesday.
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Here are photos from the anti-ICE protest held on the Rutgers New Brunswick campus Wednesday.
The students gathered on Records Field on the College Avenue main campus. They are calling on Rutgers to declare itself a sanctuary campus, meaning ICE agents will not be allowed on campus without first showing a warrant signed by a judge.
Federal ICE agents are allowed on Rutgers campuses; Rutgers said it has no legal authority to stop ICE agents from arriving on campus and detaining students/faculty. Rutgers already told students that should ICE agents arrive on campus, people should call Rutgers University Police. Campus police will check if ICE has a warrant.

However: "Upon verification of the judicial warrant or other court order, RUPD will not have the authority to interfere," said the school.
ICE did not take any students into custody on the Rutgers campus in 2025 nor so far in 2026, said a university spokeswoman.

Just Thursday, NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri said he will abide by a recent order from Gov. Mikie Sherrill that bans ICE agents from operating on state-controlled property without a warrant. This comes after last week, multiple people were arrested by ICE on the NJ Transit Light Rail in Jersey City.
“We will follow the executive order, and I’ll leave it at that," was all Kolluri said when pressured by anti-ICE protesters during an NJ Transit board of directors meeting Wednesday night.
Similarly, also Wednesday students presented this petition to the Rutgers Board of Governors and Rutgers University President William Tate. The petition was signed by over 3,000 Rutgers students and staff and calls on Rutgers to declare itself a sanctuary campus.
"It is not if, but when armed ICE agents show up on campus," one graduate student told the Rutgers Board of Governors Wednesday. "The threat is coming. What is the university going to do?"
