Barricaded Man Had 4 Shotguns In Bergen Home: Police

Police charged Edward Obertlik, 42, with multiple counts of firearms possession.

A man was charged with several counts of weapons possession after police searched his home Wednesday, police said.

Bergenfield police received a call shortly after 2 p.m. from someone stating there was a man inside a Day Avenue home with a gun who was making suicidal threats, said Capt. Mustafa Rabboh.

Police responded to the home but were not able to speak with the man, who was in contact with the caller while the incident was occurring, the captain said.

The Bergen County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team was called to the scene and the suicidal man exited the house and surrendered to authorities; he was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center, Rabboh said.

Officers searched the home and found several firearms, including four shotguns, a handgun, and an assault rifle, police said.

Edward Obertlik, 42, was charged with four counts of possession of a shotgun, possession of an assault firearm, possession of a rifle, and possession of a handgun. He was not the suicidal caller who contacted authorities, police said.

Obertlik was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $120,000 bail with no 10 percent option, Rabboh said.
