Bergen Prosecutor Investigating Nearby Hit-And-Run

A 66-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after she was hit by a car in Bergenfield, authorities said.

Authorities are searching for the vehicle they said hit a 66-year-old woman while crossing the street in Bergenfield Wednesday.

At about 7:13 p.m. Wednesday, police received a report that a pedestrian, Elizabeth Velez, 66, was struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the street near South Prospect Avenue and West Broad Street in Bergenfield, Gurbir S. Grewal, Bergen County's acting prosecutor, said in a news release.

The vehicle, believed to be a small to mid-size, dark-colored passenger vehicle, was traveling northbound on South Prospect Avenue when it struck Velez, Grewal said.

The vehicle briefly stopped after it struck Velez and the left the scene, continuing northbound, Grewal said. Velez was taken and admitted to Hackensack University Medical Center.
