Comic Creators, Fans Land at Hawthorne High

The Sixth Annual Hawthorne High School Comic-Convention and Arts Club Fundraiser will be held at the school from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14.

Just on the heels of , the Hawthorne High School will hold the Sixth Annual High School Comic-Convention and Arts Club Fundraiser on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hawthorne High School at the corner of Warburton Avenue and Parmalee Avenue.

Tickets are $5 and children under 12 free.

According to a press release, this is a “day-long celebration of comics, a truly American art form, is one of the only comic conventions in the country that is 'Kid-Friendly' where much of the days' program focuses on professional comic creators sharing their skills and knowledge with attendees of all ages.”

One of the creators featured, Jim Salicrup, the editor in chief of Papercutz and former editor at Marvel Comics, said he appreciates events like this.

“While you have the big comic book conventions in New York City and San Diego, I appreciate these smaller ones. It give me a chance to get in touch with other creators, meet fans and I have a chance to enjoy myself,” said Salicrup in a telephone interview.

The convention will feature “mini-art classes led by such noted creators as Walter Simonson, Herb Trimpe, Joe Staton and others offer the rare opportunity for a glimpse into the basics of figure drawing, action figure sculpture, writing, editing, inking and coloring for comics - all delivered by professionals in the industry.”

To help raise funds for the art club to build a new kiln, comic art, graphic novels and rare comics will be auctioned off.

Other guests featured besides Salicrup are Mark Texiera, Rudy Nebres, Paolo Rivera, Joe Giella, Mark Romanowski, Dick Ayers, Scott Roberts, James Sherman, Danny Fingeroth, Rodney Ramos, Guy Dorian, Ian Dorian, Steve Mannion, , Rick Parker and many more.
