Donna heads to Hackensack to try some Irish standards in advance of St. Patrick's Day
How many times do we drive down River Road in Hackensack, pass Harley’s Irish Pub and say, “I have to try that place!” Well I did and might I add this is the place for wonderful traditional Irish food and imported lagers.
Patrick Harley, owner of Harley’s Irish Pub which opened in 1977, does more than cook fantastic Irish standards. For the past 15 years Harley has been giving back to the community. He closes his restaurant to the public every Thanksgiving and invites the homeless to dine with him. They leave with a warm meal in their stomach and a coat and blanket to take with them.
Join the party at Harley's on St. Patrick’s Day where you can eat, drink and be merry. Be entertained all day long with Michael Harley and the Tri-County Pipes and Drums. There will be a set menu including Irish potato soup, corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash with brown gravy and onions, Shepard’s pie, their famous beer battered fish and chips and the old time favorite corned beef on rye.

Harley’s Irish Pub has a lunch menu consisting of appetizers, burgers, wraps, their three best selling Irish platters and so much more. Their extensive dinner menu adds beef, veal, chicken, pork, seafood and pasta to your choices. Take a look at their daily specials. Something is sure to catch your eye, not to mention your belly. This warm and inviting eatery also serves kid friendly dishes.
The homemade au jus gravy on the mix grill of pork chop, lamb chop, bangers and a grilled tomato was absolutely fantastic. I asked for the recipe but got a smile instead. The beer battered fish and chips were nicely fried to a crispy and crunchy finish. Visit 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and enjoy happy hour with $1 off drinks plus a buffet every Friday.

Do you make one heck of an Irish Soda Bread? Check out their Irish Soda Bread Contest this Sunday, March 13 at 4:30 p.m. All entrants must bring their homemade creations to Harley’s located at 366 River Road in Hackensack. Be prepared to be judged by a panel of hungry people. I may have to try my hand at it. Let the judging begin. Raisins or no raisins? I hear caraway seed is another great alternative. May the luck of the Irish be with you.
