Lenape New Year at New Bridge Landing
Historic New Bridge Landing was the setting for a celebration of the Lenape New Year
The Bergen County Historical Society hosted the Lenape New Year program at New Bridge Landing on Sunday. According to the BCHS, it is officially the "Algonquian New Year, Chwame Gischuch."
The Sunrise Trading Post's Bob Wills spoke about Lenape customs, food and more. He brought artifacts with him as well from the "Contact Period." Author and historian Kevin Wright addressed the crowd with his lecture, "Hearts of Stone: Ethnic Cleansing at Pavonia in 1643."
Cider was served and cooking took place in the out kitchen at the Campbell-Christie House.
