Little League Opening Day is All About Community and Tradition

A tree is planted at the Little League field in memory of Melisa Sofia.

It was a spectacular day for New Milford's traditional Little League Opening Day ceremonies Saturday. Bright sunshine, warm weather and hundreds of little leaguers anxious to play ball.

It was also a day when the community came out to support the Sofia family whose 6 1/2-year-old daughter Melisa died in her sleep last June from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. A tree was planted at the field in memory of Melisa. Robert Sofia, Melisa's brother, threw the first pitch.
