NEW MILFORD, NJ — A borough resident was one of 12 women arrested in a Paterson prostitution sweep Tuesday, authorities said.

Briana Ramirez, 29, was charged with prostitution, said Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale. She was one of three women from Bergen County charged in the sweep.

Police conducted the sweep after receiving complaints from concerned citizens about acts of prostitution occurring near Van Housten and East 18th streets in Paterson, Speziale said.

In the first phase of the sting, undercover police detectives posed as "Johns." The second phase involved undercover officers acting as "prostitutes" who were solicited by people for sexual acts for money. Twenty-five "Johns" were arrested and charged, the police director said.

"Stay out of Paterson for illegal prostitution," Speziale said. "The message should be loud and clear we will continue to increase our efforts."
