Memorial Day

I love Memorial Day weekend for so many reasons — the start of summer, the anticipation of warmer weather and, of course, the annual Memorial Day Parade.  Although I haven’t participated recently, I marched in the parade for many years.  It started when I was very young, as a Brownie, and continued throughout the years with the school band.  I remember hoping it would be really hot out — and, when it was, I particularly remember sweating in my marching band uniform.  But memorizing my patriotic music and playing it for the spectators always felt important.  And I distinctly remember, each year, stopping in front of the Presbyterian Church to hear one of my classmates play Taps on the trumpet.  It sounded beautiful, and it was always at that moment when it hit me that Memorial Day, although a day that is often celebrated with family and friends, is about honoring the heroes of our country, our Veterans (including my grandfather, who fought in World War II, and my husband, a former Marine).

One year, Elefante Music had its own float in the parade.  My father, brother and uncle, along with my elementary/early high school band teacher, Mr. Leister, played the music, while Mr. Leister’s daughters, my sister and I danced and waved (and banged on tambourines).  I will never, ever forget that.

Being included in such an important day for our country, and community, has been an honor.  I am grateful to have grown up in a town that allowed me that opportunity year after year (just another benefit to being a member of the school band!).  It is a tradition that I hope to pass on to my daughter.
