"A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken." ~James Dent
The Fourth of July signifies not only our country's independence, but the dog-days of summer. BBQ's, pool parties, picnics and the beach are where most of us will be spending the upcoming weekend. It is important to keep in mind safety in regards to protecting yourself (and others) from heat exhaustion and sunburn since the majority will be celebrating outdoors.
According to the Consumer Energy Center (www.consumerenergycenter.org), the best way to protect ourselves from heat related illness is PREVENTION.
- Wear light weight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating of at least "SPF 15" to exposed portions of the body
- Limit exposure during the hottest hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- If possible, avoid strenuous work or exercise outside.
- Take advantage of shade in the environment and/or wear a wide-brimmed hat.
- Stay in air-conditioned areas or use cooling fans to speed sweat evaporation.
- Drink lots of cool, non-alcoholic fluids
- Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink.
