GL Softball, Baseball Teams Victorious

Softball beats Cranford, Baseball defeats Summit.

Chalk up another win for the Governor Livingston varsity softball team, but this one will be a game to remember when the 2011 campaign eventually comes to a close.

The Highlanders improved to 15-2. keeping their hold on the # 1 ranking in Union County with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Cranford yesterday in Berkeley Heights.

With the game scoreless through eight frames thanks to a stellar pitching performance by Jordan Robbins, Cranford took a 3-0 lead in the top of the ninth.

But the Lady Highlanders battled back on a single by Mackenzie Liss, a sac fly from Stephanie Cataldo and a base hit by Jenna Kulbeck to even the game at 3-all.

After keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard in the top of the 10th, Liss came through with an RBI single to bring home Kelly Goense to end another wild GL game, which has been more the norm of late.

You might remember the boys' baseball team defeated Westfield this past weekend in a crazy 17-14 victory to advance to the county finals.

And speaking of baseball, the county's # 2 team defeated Summit on Monday by a final of 8-3 to improve to 16-3 on the season. 

Aaron Smith struck out nine in six innings while adding a pair of hits and an RBI --while Sunday's hero -- Mike Cranston, picked up a pair of RBI's to help the cause.Cranston belted the game-winning homer against the Blue Devils in the UCT semi-finals.

GL will host Cranford in a regular season matchup this afternoon at 4 pm in a preview of Sunday's UCT championship game which will be played at Williams field in Elizabeth, also at 4 pm.
