The 28-year-old had "an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the community," the Union County sheriff said.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — A Union County Sheriff's officer died in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 78 on Friday, officials said.

Joseph DeVito, 28, of Kenilworth, died of the injuries he suffered in the crash that happened about 10:30 a.m. Friday, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Charles Marchan said.

DeVito was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle east on I-78 in the westbound lanes, Marchan said, when he hit a Peterbilt semi-trailer hauling a car carrier driven west on I-78 by Wandy Gomez, 32, of Groveport, Ohio.
