Mustang Travel Sports Club U10 Baseball Team Brings Championship Back to Mountainside

The boys of the Mustang Travel Sports Club U10 baseball team took home the title of Wooden Bat Challenge Tournament Champions this past weekend from Chester, NY.

The Mustangs baseball team is a not-for-profit club team made up of a group of ten boys, primarily living in Mountainside. The team is sponsored and trained by Full Count Baseball of Piscataway under Coach Matt Belford.

Over the Mother’s Day weekend, the Mustangs competed in four games. Five top-notch U10 baseball teams were registered in the tournament, held at The Rock Sports Park.

The boys were challenged by using wooden bats, as opposed to the aluminum bats commonly used while playing primarily on artificial turf surface, rather than grass and dirt.

After posting a 3 and 0 record, the Mustangs earned the second-seed going into the championship game.

The Mustangs were down 4-0 early in the 1st inning of the title game against the top-seeded Frozen Ropes Rockies South, but fought back with two runs in the 4th inning.

And the mighty Mustangs continued to battle back in a big way.

With two out in the top of the 6th inning, trailing 5-2, the Mustangs scored three runs to tie the game.

A great defensive stand in the bottom of the 6th sent the game into extra innings.

The tension continued after a scoreless 7th inning, until the Mustangs took the lead when they scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 6-5.  

Still, it took an incredible defensive effort in the bottom of the inning to nail down the championship.

After the game, the boys, who are all A-students, congratulated the other team, accepted the trophy and then each boy thanked their mom with a Mother’s Day rose.

The team is coached by Dirk Armstrong, Jerry Eicke, Chuck Saia and Chris Compton.
