New Providence Memorial Library Seeks Community Input

New Providence Memorial Library (NPML) is looking for community-wide input. They’ve created a short 23-question survey to gauge public opinions about everything from parking to collections with an emphasis on programming and library spaces.

The data will be used to create a strategic plan that will provide goals and direction for the next 3-5 years. The current strategic plan runs through 2020.

The survey is also part of 2 other initiatives at the library: a capital improvement plan and a centennial celebration. NPML is awaiting guidelines and the opening of the application process for funds that will be made available to NJ libraries through the NJ Construction Bond Act, a $125million matching fund approved by voters in 2017. It is hoped that some matching funds can be obtained to carry out renovations in the library that will improve space utilization in several high-use areas.

There are a couple of questions in the survey that seek to gauge willingness to support library renovations either by donation or by tax referendum. Library trustees are exploring funding options with Boro officials but it is likely that funding for any renovations would include a mix of public funding and private donations.

The start of the strategic plan timeframe and the library renovation project coincides with the library’s centennial year in 2021. The library was formed by a group of interested citizens in 1921 who housed the collection at their homes. In 100 years, NPML has grown to a 16,500 square foot building with a collection of over 100,000 physical items and nearly 500,000 downloadable items. NPML is looking to mark the year with special programming and other activities.
