Saltbox Museum Open Sunday

The Saltbox Museum, one of the facilities maintained by the New Providence Historical Society, will again be open to the public on the first Sunday in July; from 1 - 3 p.m. You are welcome to pay us a visit at our mid 1800's farmhouse, in what at one time was called downtown Turkey. This summer and fall the society plans to have the Saltbox open the first Sunday of each month. The Saltbox interior is outfitted to replicate a mid 1800's farmhouse. The existing building was originally two separate homes, which were joined together, many years ago. The building had been on a piece of property across the street from it's current location; and was moved in 1966, by the newly formed Historical Society, who was seeking a home. Photos of the home, while across the street, as well as the moving of the Saltbox will be available for viewing on Sunday.

The society also maintains an archive room, called The Mason Room, located at the rear of the New Providence Memorial Library. Access is via the main center isle of the library. The archive room contains many old photos, maps, and various documents on the history of New Providence. The archive room is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Please stop by either of our facilities when you have a chance. The society seeks new members and is always interested in having town residents becoming active in our organization. We also welcome old photos/documents that families may have, dealing with our town in years gone by. Feel free to contact the society at: (908)665-1034  or at www.newprovidencehistorical.com or on
