Sustainable Berkeley Heights Now on Sustainable Business Registry
Non-profit Organization Focused on Improving the Environment and Accelerating Innovation is Recognized for Its Sustainable Practices
On Tuesday, December 10, 2019, the Berkeley Heights Innovation and Sustainability Alliance (a/k/a Sustainable Berkeley Heights) was admitted for listing on the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry, making this organization only one of nine non-profits in New Jersey and the first business or civic organization in Berkeley Heights to receive this recognition.
The Registry, a collaboration between the Rutgers' New Jersey Small Business Development Centers (NJSBDC) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), recognizes organizations throughout the state that have adopted sustainable practices in their operations. To qualify for membership, an organization needs to demonstrate five sustainable practices or actions it has taken. Additionally, the organization must identify one measurable environmental benefit and one cost savings that resulted from its practices or actions.
Sustainable Berkeley Heights qualified for membership in the Registry as a result of actions it took this year - during its initial year of existence - in the following five categories: (1) Management and Leadership; (2) Waste Reuse; (3) Waste Recycling; (4) Community Action; and (5) Other Innovative Actions. Among these actions included the non-profit's two shoes, co-sponsored litter clean-ups, and co-sponsorship of Berkeley Heights Vegan Fest 2019.
