County announces veterans salute pin design contest (spartaindependent.com subscription) — Middle schoolers in and around Newton can help honor local veterans by designing the official 2026 Sussex County Salute to Military Veterans pin, with entries due June 19 to the county office on Spring Street in Newton. The winning design will be made into a commemorative pin for November’s celebration and earn the student a $200 prize and parade recognition. This is a hands-on way for local youth to thank those who served.

2. Seniors eligible for free farmers market produce program (townshipjournal.com subscription) — Eligible Sussex County seniors can receive a one-time $40 benefit for fresh produce, with distribution starting June 1 at the Division of Senior Services office on Spring Street in Newton. Residents 60 and older must meet income limits and bring proof of age, residency, and income, or self-declare if needed. Benefits are valid at participating New Jersey farm stands through November 30.

3. Dive Into Summer With Swim Lessons at the Town of Newton Pool (tapinto.net) — Families in Newton can now sign up for Summer 2026 swim lessons at the Town of Newton Pool, with options for everyone from toddlers to adults. Classes run Monday through Thursday mornings with some evening slots, feature small 4:1 class ratios, and cost $175 for residents. Registration details and required pre-assessment information are provided for interested swimmers.

4. Man sentenced to prison in Sussex County residential burglary case (wrnjradio.com) — A recent Sussex County burglary case that went through Superior Court in Newton has resulted in a four-year state prison sentence for a Queens man. Prosecutors say he admitted entering a Montague Township home without permission and stealing personal property, and he must also pay restitution and fees. The case was investigated by New Jersey State Police.
