Oakland Library Art Show Features Watercolors by Artist Roberta Oliver

The "New Friends of the Oakland Public Library" presents the works of artists from Northern New Jersey on Sunday, Sept. 23, from noon to 4 p.m.

Dozens of talented artists will gather at the Oakland Public Library later this month for its second annual art show.

The proceeds from the art sale support cultural programs offered at the library, according to Ronnie Levine of the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library.

"Last year, the 'New Friends' held a very successful First Annual Oakland Public Library Art Show, featuring the works of over 25 local artists," Levine said. "Based on our success last year and the enthusiasm of the over 300 people who attended, this year we will be highlighting the works of over 40 local artists."

The group is in final stages of planning its second annual art show, which is scheduled to be held on September 23 at the library.

Levine said of particular interest is Franklin Lakes resident Roberta Oliver, a "renowned artist" and a member of the prestigious New Jersey Watercolor Association.

Levine said Oliver was one of the most successful artists to exhibit at the show last year.

"Entering shows gives me, as an artist, exposure for my work and motivation to continue to improve my skills," said Oliver.

The Franklin Lakes resident said watercolor appeals to her for its light and translucent qualities, as well as the ease with which she practice the medium.

"I love being able to paint at any time of the day and watercolor allows me to just rinse my brush out and run to get the kids," said Oliver. "No major clean up."

She said she revels in highlighting often ignored snapshots of life: "Things that people don't normally notice like a close-up of acorns with sunlit oak leaves, a swan, a family of ducks, expressive portraits or a seascape.

"I prefer my subjects to have strong natural sunlight with colorful shadows," Oliver continued. "The seasons in the Northeast create new inspiration every few months. I am always taking photos and planning for my next painting."

Oliver said she's excited and looks forward to meeting other talented artists at the show and feels privileged to be included in the Oakland Public Library's second annual event.
