Oakland Police Stop Man Driving Wrong Way On I-287 [Video]

The 73-year-old Wayne man was driving on the wrong side of the road after he had a medical episode, police said.

OAKLAND, NJ — Police stopped a 73-year-old Wayne man who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 287 after he experienced a "medical episode" Monday night, police said.

Police received a report from state and Wanaque police at 8:55 p.m. of a white Toyota pickup going north in the southbound side of the interstate, Lt. Christian Eldridge said.

The unidentified man was seen near exit 55 on the highway going toward Oakland and police officers responded, Eldridge said.

Officer Gary Fiore located the truck while it was going into the borough, heading north, against the flow of traffic. Fiore drove alongside the pickup the fast lane shoulder and yelled out of his window and used his flashlight to get his attention, police said.

The driver stopped just before the I-287 merges with Route 208 North, police said.

Franklin Lakes, Wyckoff and State Police helped Oakland officers shut down I-287 South while the man was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Wayne for treatment Eldridge said.

Sgt. Timothy Keenan and Officers Stephen Broek, Brian Rowin and Jonathan Coleman assisted Fiore, Eldridge said.
