Two people were killed late Friday afternoon in a head-on crash in New Jersey, according to police.

The accident happened at 4:24 p.m. on Friday, when the Hamilton Township Police Department (Mays Landing area) responded to Millville Avenue (Route 552) for the report of a motor vehicle crash, police said.

An investigation determined a 2007 Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on Route 552 crossed the centerline for an unknown reason and side swiped a 1998 BMW M3 traveling eastbound on Route 552, according to police.

The Corolla continued in the eastbound lane and crashed head on into a 2011 Kia Sorrento traveling westbound on CR 552.

The driver of the Corolla, Allison Salerno, 35 of Vineland, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Sorrento, Providence Colon, 48 of Pleasantville was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Atlantic City Campus, but later died as a result of her injuries, police said.

The driver of the BMW, Barry Lubin, 51 of Vineland was not injured.

Salerno was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, while Colon was not, and airbags deployed in both vehicles, police said.

Assisting at the scene were the Township of Hamilton Rescue, Mizpah Volunteer Fire Company, Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company, Laureldale Volunteer Fire Company, Milmay Volunteer Fire Company, Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Crash Unit, AtlantiCare Paramedics, and the New Jersey State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Traffic in the area was detoured around the area for 3 hours while the scene was cleared. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Ofc. Osby, Det Armitage, and Ofc. Wade Smith of the Township of Hamilton Police Department.
