800-Pound Great White Shark Detected 10 Miles Off Cape May

Her name is Miss May, and the Ocearch Global Shark Tracker is monitoring her.

CAPE MAY, NJ — Say hello to "Miss May." An ocean research group detected an 800-pound great white shark off the coast of Cape May on Tuesday morning.

The OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker pinged Miss May shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday outside the Delaware Bay. She was tagged in February and has favored the waters off Cape May County.

Miss May got as close as about 10 miles from Cape May's shoreline Tuesday night before veering farther into the ocean. The last ping at 8:29 p.m. had her about 15 miles from the Wildwood and Stone Harbor beaches.

OCEARCH tagged the 10-foot-2 shark Feb. 15 near Fernandina Beach, Florida. Miss May has travelled more than 2,700 miles since.

OCEARCH has tagged several sharks who have travelled toward the Jersey Shore. Great white shark Mary Lee visited roughly 20 miles off the coast of Belmar in 2017.
