Another Great White Shark Located Off NJ Coast

For the second time in a month, a great white shark has been located near the Jersey Shore.

NEW JERSEY - A 715-pound great white shark was spotted off the coast of New Jersey this week, experts say. It’s the second great white that has recently been located near the state.

Tancook, a 9-foot, 7-inch juvenile white shark, was located off the coast of Atlantic City on May 4 around 11 p.m, per OCEARCH. The next day, he was pinged off the coast of Long Branch around 9 p.m.

OCEARCH’s satellite “pings” go off when a shark swims close enough to the water's surface. It wasn’t immediately clear how far Tancook was from the Jersey Shore.

Tancook was first tagged on Sept. 22, 2021 near Ironbound Island off the coast of Nova Scotia. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because a great white shark named Ironbound, also tagged in Nova Scotia waters, was reported about 150 miles from the Jersey Shore on April 28. Tancook means “facing the open sea” to the indigenous Mi’kmaq people of Nova Scotia.
