OCEAN CITY, NJ — Ocean City took a step to reduce risk at the intersection of Eighth Street and Bay Avenue. The intersection was the sight of a fatal accident during Memorial Day weekend.

Cape May County completed work last week to eliminate the southerly crosswalk. Signage now directs pedestrians to the northerly crosswalk — away from the path of cars taking left turns from Eighth Street onto Bay Avenue.

Thomas F. Gibbons Jr. died after he and his wife were struck by a car May 25 at the intersection. Gibbons and his wife, Stephanie, were struck after a driver going west on Eighth Street turned left on Bay Avenue. Read more: Man Killed In Ocean City Crash Was An Engineer, Father, Husband

Dr. John Albert, Gibbons's stepfather, made a case to City Council last June that officials must make the intersection safer.

"I'm not looking for sympathy," Albert said. "I'm looking for action."

Mayor Jay Gillian noted changes to the intersection in his weekly address Friday.

"I want to thank the county for working with residents and the city to make this modification, minimizing the risk to pedestrians using the intersection," Gillian said.
