Day Without Shoes to Benefit Children in Need in Ocean City

The Day Without Shoes 5K/1 Mile Walk is set for Saturday, May 7.

Ocean City, NJ -- Ocean City residents are asked to take off their shoes to help children in need put on a pair of their own.

The Ocean City High School Key Club and TOMS: One for one Shoes present the Day Without Shoes 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Saturday, May 7. This is a barefoot run on the beach designed to bring awareness of children’s health and education.

For each race participant, TOMS will donate a pair of shoes to a child in need.

The idea for the race came from Ocean City High School senior and Key Club Treasurer Sammi Bornhardt, according to Key Club Advisor Ashley Schmid.

"She learned of One Day Without Shoes and decided to create and support TOMS by holding a barefoot race/walk to get as many participants as possible," Schmid wrote in an email to Ocean City Patch on Wednesday. "She wrote a grant that was accepted by Kiwanis International, as well as filled out the application for the City. She wrote to TOMS because, 'we have many of the same beliefs as TOMS and we are founded on community service, helping those not only in our local community, but around the world. We hope to make an impact on the world, literally one (barefoot) step at a time.'”
