LaCosta Motel & Lounge is sponsoring the run/walk, which starts at 9:30 a.m. at Landis Avenue and JFK Boulevard. It features a 1.5-mile walk and 5K run. Registration is $25 starting at 8 a.m. Raffles, family fun, food, music and vendors follow.

“We definitely want it to be an annual thing, to support children with heart defects so this doesn't happen to another family,” said Justina LaRosa Nees, Michael's mother, Sea Isle City native and graduate of Ocean City High School.

Michael also left behind his dad Dan Nees and brother Mason, 6, as well as a large extended family.

A sophomore at Cape May County Technical High School in the allied medicine program, Michael was diagnosed at age 4 with a congenital heart defect known as sub aortic stenosis. He received annual tests to monitor the condition, which occurs when a thin membrane starts to form at the bottom of the sub aortic valve.

“He wanted to be a nurse or a nurse practitioner when he graduated,” according to the foundation web site. “He loved to help people, and loved to stick up for the underdog.”
