An off-duty firefighter died at a New Jersey triathlon on Sunday, according to authorities and reports.
The unidentified firefighter died at the Cape May triathlon, according to CBS3. The firefighter was competing in the Escape the Cape Triathlon on Sunday morning.
The 8th annual Escape the Cape Triathlon & Open Water Classic included a five -mile run and a three-mile swim that starts with a 12-foot jump off the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

The man had nearly completed the swimming portion of the event that's held in Lower Township when he was found unresponsive in the water, Jim Salmon, a spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, told nj.com.
The cause of death was apparent cardiac arrest, Salmon said.

Adam Thiel, Philadelphia’s fire commissioner, paid tribute to the man in a tweet on Sunday. The other firefighter who died was apparently not at the event.
