The girl, who was outside her house around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, was not the intended target and two groups of people may have been shooting at each other, according to Camden County Police.

The shooting victim, who was in the area Eighth Street and Spruce Street in Camden when the incident occurred, was taken to Cooper University Hospital, according to the police.

The suspects were able to speed off in a car away from the scene. Police say they are searching for a black male who was last seen fleeing the area wearing dark clothes.

Condolences poured in as word spread about Gabby's death. Friends on Facebook said the mother, Meresa Carter, was asking for prayers.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the area since the shooters jumped in a car and fled the area at a high rate of speed, according to philly.com.

At the intersection, some residents and others lingered outside of an area taped off by police, and a resident told philly.com he heard what he thought were firecrackers going off.

"It was so many at a time," Morgan Sellers, 42, who lives nearby on Cherry Street, told the publication. "If she dies, they need to put their guns down."

Anyone with any information about the shooting is asked to call Camden County police at 856-757-7042.
