'Hands Across Beaches' Event To Oppose Offshore Wind In Ocean City

Protect Our Coast NJ and other groups will join hands on the beach to show their opposition of offshore wind development.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Local organization Protect Our Coast NJ is joining other groups in “Hands Across the Beaches” to protest continuing offshore wind development.

The event, scheduled for July 15 at 11 a.m., comes after federal approval of Ocean Wind 1, a 98-turbine wind project planned just off the coast of Ocean City. Read more: Feds Approve Wind Farm Project Off Coast Of Ocean City

Offshore wind opponents will line up on the water's edge at the 14th Street beach and hold hands, signaling their unity in fighting development.

Protect Our Coast NJ "encourages and invites everyone to participate and show their unity in opposing Offshore Wind Development," they said in a news release.

"The construction of the offshore wind facilities will have an irreversible, devastating impact on our coastal communities whose economies and livelihoods depend on a healthy ocean," the group said. "It will negatively impact our oceans, marine mammals, fishing industry, and electrical rates."

This event is scheduled with other shore groups up and down the coast of New Jersey and other states, Protect Our Coast NJ said.
